Every August and September, the scene of the ripe rice season in Y Tý is as beautiful as a painting. Looking down from the top of the mountain, the small inter-commune asphalt road looks like a soft thread winding through the bright yellow patches of rice.
Y Tý in autumn is ranked among the most beautiful ripe rice hunting tourist destinations in the northwest.
Located at an altitude of over 2,000m above sea level, Y Tý is a highland commune in Bát Xát District, Lào Cai Province. It is also the homeland of the Hà Nhì, Mông and Dao people, ethnic groups with a unique and rich cultural identity. This land is also famous for its primeval forest stretching across three communes, Ý Tý, Dền Sáng, Sảng Ma Sáo, located on high mountains like a work of art from nature.
From Hà Nội to Lào Cai, you can go by train or by sleeper bus. From Lào Cai City, you can rent a motorbike or self-drive car to Y Tý. The trip will take around five hours because there are many beautiful scenes along the way and you will not be able to resist stopping to take photos.
The journey to Y Tý is challenging and difficult with winding roads and dangerous passes. However, it is also an attractive destination for people who love adventure and want to explore. The climate here is cool all year round, but winter is extremely harsh and many young people choose this time to come here to hunt for snow and clouds.
Y Tý is beautiful and charming in its own way in every season, depending on the purpose of your visit.
If visitors are looking for clouds, from September through the winter to April is perfect and the scenery at this time is so majestic, like a sea in the sky. From May to June it is called the season of pouring water, so tourists can see the fields as beautiful as paintings and then from August to September, this place will put on a new golden coat as the rice fields are entering the harvest season.
The terraced fields in Y Tý and some neighbouring communes such as A Mú Sung, A Lù and Ngải Thầu are very beautiful, continuously stretching along the mountain slopes down to the valley.
The most scenic road to appreciate Y Tý in the autumn is considered to be Ngải Thầu route, this is also the place that many visitors choose to hunt clouds. This route is difficult to traverse because of the many rocks and continuous steep passes, but is still a choice for many tourists because along the way you can admire many beautiful terraced fields. Dotted among the majesty of the terraced fields in Ngải Thầu are the earthen-walled houses of the Mông people.
In addition, this time you can admire the terraced fields in Thề Pả Valley, Bát Xát District, located in the two communes of Y Tý and Ngải Thầu. In the local language, Thề Pả means fields at the foot of the mountain or bottom fields, because the place is covered by thousands of winding terraced fields with a total area of over 223ha. Thề Pả fields cultivated by the Hà Nhì and Mông people have been ranked as a national scenic spot by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The Thề Pả terraced fields heritage complex is not only an attractive tourist destination, but also carries many cultural and historical values. The Mông and Hà Nhì people are the ones who created the Thề Pả terraced fields and they had to put a lot of effort and dedication to turn what were wild hills into picturesque terraced fields.
Beyond the breathtaking vistas, Y Tý offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of its indigenous inhabitants. By immersing yourself in the vibrant Saturday market, you can savour local delicacies, admire traditional costumes and gain a deeper understanding of the Hà Nhì way of life.
One of the highlights of the Hà Nhì culture is the Khô Già Già Festival, or the Praying for a Good Harvest Festival, which was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014. This event offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the traditions and customs of these ethnic communities.
In addition to the stunning rice fields and cultural attractions, Y Tý is blessed with a wealth of natural wonders. You can explore the majestic waterfalls of Thiên Sinh, Lao Chải and Hồng Ngài, or challenge yourself by hiking to the summit of Lảo Thẩn Peak, one of the 15 highest peaks in Việt Nam and a true cloud-hunter paradise.
Whether you seek adventure, cultural immersion, or simply the chance to marvel at nature’s handiwork, Y Tý beckons with its irresistible charm. From the golden hues of the ripe rice fields to the cultural tapestry of the Hà Nhì, Mông and Dao communities, this remote commune promises an unforgettable experience for the adventurous traveler by embracing the challenge of the winding roads, immersing yourself in the rich heritage and losing yourself in the breathtaking landscapes that make Y Tý a true gem of Việt Nam’s northwest. RIYADH: A Swedish woman has discovered the ‘pure kindness’ of Saudis after traveling across the Kingdom solo on a motorcycle.
Kristina Lindstrom told Arab News: “Saudi Arabia seemed uncharted and undefined to me, especially with its recent openness to tourism.
“I’m endlessly curious about different cultures, people and landscapes.”
During her trip through Saudi Arabia, she has explored Buraidah, Hail, Wadi Al-Disah in the southwest province of Tabuk, Yanbu, Jeddah, Taif, Baha and Abha.
Before she crosses into the UAE, Lindstrom plans to visit Riyadh and Al-Hofuf. After the Emirates, she will travel by boat to Bandar Abbas, a coastal city in southern Iran, then to Pakistan, India and Nepal.
Lindstrom rides a 2005 Honda 650 Transalp: “It’s a great bike to travel around the world, with a very reliable engine, and you can find spare parts anywhere in the world.”
She has ridden on two wheels since she was young. “I love the feeling of freedom,” she said. “The adrenaline rush and the ability to fully engage all my senses while on the bike are truly exhilarating. Riding allows me to attain mental clarity, pushing problems and worries far from my thoughts.”
During a visit to Vietnam in 2016, Lindstrom decided to buy a secondhand bike to travel around Vietnam and Cambodia. At that moment, the Swedish national realized she wanted to go on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure away from home. “I worked hard for five years and saved every penny to be able to do this trip,” she added.
Her big adventure has included stops in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkiye, Iraq and now Saudi Arabia.
Lindstrom said that the Kingdom’s natural landmarks attracted her to the country. “Saudi Arabia’s landscape is incredibly diverse. As a motorcycle and camping enthusiast, the mountains surrounding Baha and Abha are my paradise.”
She also highlighted the Kingdom’s landscapes, winding roads and campsites, as well as the captivating beauty of Wadi Al-Disaha and AlUla.
Lindstrom said that she enjoys interacting with cultures that are different to her own. “Kindness always touches me deeply. Once, I was lost in the desert, and two young Saudi men appeared out of nowhere, offering me sweets with warm smiles before disappearing. It was a simple act, but it touched me deeply.
“I have also received assistance countless times, and I am very grateful for the warmth I have received.”
Camel-milking was another memorable experience for Lindstrom. “My host invited me to their farm, and it was a pleasure to try to milk a camel. I adore animals, especially camels with their gentle intelligence.”
Lindstrom expressed her gratitude for the hospitality of the Saudi people: “My motorcycle fell in Wadi Al-Kamar (north of Jeddah) during a thunderstorm, and two Saudi young men immediately stopped to help me without hesitation.”
In another instance, an unknown benefactor paid for Lindstrom’s meal at a restaurant, offering her a glimpse into Saudi generosity.
“He simply paid with his credit card before I could even access my card. What an indescribable hospitality,” she said.
Lindstrom told Arab News that Saudi Arabia is one of the safest countries she has ever traveled to, especially as a solo female visitor. “While relaxing in the wild, a car passed and its driver stopped, offering me water, biscuits and an invitation to lunch. It may sound scary to some, but in Saudi Arabia, it’s quite natural and safe. It’s pure kindness without any restrictions,” she said.
For any tourist in the Kingdom, experiencing the Red Sea is a must. Lindstrom also went diving in Yanbu. “The Red Sea was full of colorful corals and all kinds of fish. Some fish were curious and came a little closer to me, but watching them was fun.
“I love exploring the underwater world, and this experience motivated me for more. I can’t wait to dive again and discover more beauty under the waves.”
Throughout her stay in Saudi Arabia, Lindstrom said that she did not experience any negative or uncomfortable reactions from anyone. The Saudis she encountered always treated her with respect and kindness, which made her feel welcome and comfortable, she added.
“One of the really striking things is the deep sense of security when camping alone. I was almost setting up my tent anywhere without fear; the locals respected my privacy, and I never felt that I was in danger.”

Pelancong Sweden puji ‘kebaikan murni’ penduduk tempatan selepas perjalanan motosikal melalui Arab Saudi
Dia menunggang dua roda sejak dia muda. “Saya suka perasaan kebebasan,” katanya.
BATUMI — Georgia’s tourism authority has said it aims to triple the amount of visitors the country receives from Saudi Arabia over the next five to 10 years.
With direct flights operating from Jeddah and Riyadh — as well as Dubai — Batumi is becoming an increasingly popular destination for GCC residents. It’s less than four hours by plane, and there’s just one hour’s time difference from the Kingdom. Safety and affordability are also major draws.
Batumi has much else to offer, including 21km of swimmable areas along its coast, stunning botanical gardens overlooking the clear blue waters of the Black Sea, and, of course, the sea itself.
There is also the beautiful lush countryside no more than an hour’s drive from the city center. There, you’ll find walking trails through the tree-lined mountains and hills; valleys filled with vineyards; and rivers and streams that cut through the undergrowth. Visit the breathtaking Makhuntseti waterfall, which is located in the village of the same name.
Another must-visit just a short drive out of the city is the point at which the muddy waters of the Acharistskali meet the clear Chorokhi river that enters from Turkiye. The two rivers join, but do not appear to mix at first. There are many theories as to why: some say it’s the difference in density or minerals of the water, others believe it is due to temperature difference. What all can agree on is that it provides an extraordinary sight as the two rivers flow alongside each other undisturbed before finally blending further downstream.
Batumi’s surrounding countryside, then, is the perfect place to unwind, but also to get involved in outdoor pursuits such as mountaineering. For the less energetic, there’s always bird watching — hundreds of thousands of migratory species suddenly appear around Batumi every September.
But you don’t have to leave the city to enjoy some nature: Batumi is home to a number of landscaped parks and gardens, including the Seaside Park, which runs alongside the boardwalk for 7km, and is filled with plants, trees and sculptures.
There’s also the 108-hectare Batumi Botanical Garden — one of the largest in the former Soviet Union — in Mtsvane Kontskhi, around 9km from the city center. As well as the carefully thought-out gardens, there is also a zipline that runs in front of the cliff face – the greenery on your left and the sea to the right — and way down below.
A stroll along the boardwalk provides views of the mountains, the sea and the modern towers that decorate parts of Batumi’s coast, as well as the mesmerizing kinetic statue of Ali and Nino — the creation of Tamara Kvesitadze which tells the story of a Muslim and Christian who fell in love.
In the same area are various boats offering short trips to sea to get a wider view of the city’s impressive coastline.
Away from the water, the city streets are perfect for wandering — the older, smaller, architecture offering a more-relaxing environment along the tree-lined historic areas which open into various squares where you can relax at one of the many cafés and restaurants. You might even catch a display of traditional Georgian dancing, where the men leap impressively into the air, while the women seem to glide effortlessly around.
As for the food… be warned, Georgians love carbs. But it’s worth indulging in a Khachapuri Adjaruli — a boat-shaped white bread dough, covered in a heavy white cheese, with a raw egg on top.
There’s also the traditional Khinkali — a dumpling filled with meat and gravy. Eating this is a skill in itself — you bite a small hole in the dumpling and take a slurp of gravy before savoring the meat. But do wait for it to cool before trying this!
Stews are heavily featured, and if these don’t float your boat, then the grilled meat is a great option, alongside a bowl of Georgia’s finest tomato and cucumber salad — especially welcome after a few hours tramping through the winding streets or following a leisurely stroll through the mountains.
Whether you plan to make Batumi part of a wider visit to Georgia, or simply to spend a week or long weekend here, it’s a great location to relax, explore, and — if 95 percent of Saudis surveyed are to be believed — come back to.
NANCHANG — Can you imagine taking a shuttle train along a cliff, instead of trekking hours to the top of a mountain, looking for a perfect camera angle? Such a heart-stirring scene will soon turn into reality.
A batch of 30 electrical multiple unit (EMU) trains, part of what is called the “mountain area elevated monorail sightseeing trains and track system,” were delivered to the Dajue Mountain Scenic Area in Zixi County, east China’s Jiangxi Province on Thursday.
With more than a third of the 11.8-km touring route running along a cliff, the trains “hang” visitors in the air at an elevation between 850 and 1,150 meters. It is by far the longest-known cliff train route in China.
Developed by Zhuzhou CRRC Special Equipment Technology Co., Ltd., each of the trains has six carriages with a carrying capacity of 56 people.
The company’s chief engineer, Jin Junhui, said they independently developed the hinge-jointed bogie and geared rail track to improve the train’s gradeability. “An infrared anti-collision system is also installed to ensure its safety and reliability,” Jin added.
